The Alfred Duma Local Municipality, led by Mayor Cllr Z.J. Sibisi, together with uThukela District Municipality, proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of Aphiwe Buthelezi, a dedicated learner from Gabangemfundo Primary School, located in Uitvaal Ward 35, under the leadership of Cllr N Mbhense. Aphiwe secured 3rd position in the Provincial Reading Competition held from 19–20 February 2026 in Westville, Durban.
The literary programme was successfully executed through a collaborative effort between Alfred Duma LM Libraries and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC): Libraries, aimed at promoting literacy, developing reading skills, and nurturing young readers across the district and province.
Representing the uThukela District with pride and confidence at provincial level, Aphiwe demonstrated exceptional reading fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, and expression. Competing against top learners from across KwaZulu-Natal, she stood out for her remarkable poise and deep understanding of the text presented. This achievement reflects her hard work, consistent practice, and passion for reading.
A special word of appreciation is extended to Ms Zwane, the dedicated educator from Gabangemfundo Primary School, who diligently groomed and supported Aphiwe throughout the competition journey. Her mentorship and commitment played a significant role in preparing Aphiwe to perform confidently at provincial level.
Reading competitions play a vital role in promoting literacy development, building learners’ confidence, and enhancing public speaking skills. Aphiwe’s success highlights the importance of cultivating a strong reading culture within schools and communities. It also demonstrates the positive impact of supportive educators, involved parents, and structured literacy programmes in primary education.
This achievement brings pride not only to Gabangemfundo Primary School but also to the entire Alfred Duma Local Municipality community. It serves as motivation to other learners to embrace reading as a powerful tool for academic success and personal growth.
The municipality commends Aphiwe, her educators, and the school leadership for their dedication and commitment to excellence. This milestone is a clear indication that with determination and guidance, learners from our district can compete and excel at provincial level.
Congratulations to Aphiwe Buthelezi on this remarkable accomplishment. May this be the beginning of many more achievements in her academic journey.
