Alfred Duma Local Municipality’s Department of Development Planning and Human Settlement, in collaboration with uThukela Environmental Health and Safety Practitioners officials, conducted salon inspections along Lyle Street and at Magudulela’s building on Tuesday, 28 July 2026. The inspections formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws and health and safety regulations. The sanitary requirements are aimed at protecting both workers and clients.

During the inspections, officials assessed a range of operational and public health standards within salon premises. Particular attention was given to the cleanliness of work areas and working tools, the availability and use of clean towels, and the proper sterilisation of equipment used in service delivery. Furthermore, the importance of staff holding valid health certificates, maintaining proper waste disposal practices, and ensuring good ventilation within salons to reduce health risks for both employees and clients was emphasised. In addition to hygiene and sanitary requirements, inspectors verified business compliance matters, including the possession of valid business permits and adherence to approved trading hours. Officials also assessed the safe use of electrical equipment and chemical products commonly used in salons, and stressed that first aid supplies should be available at all times as part of basic workplace safety.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality also clarified that these inspections are not intended to shut businesses down. The purpose is to work constructively with salon owners and operators to uplift standards, promote compliance, and safeguard public health across the community. Salon owners are encouraged to cooperate fully with inspectors during compliance visits and to take prompt steps to address any identified gaps. The municipality also urges salon businesses to apply for a CK for their operations, secure lease agreements where applicable, and comply with municipal regulations to support lawful, safe, and sustainable trading.
