The City continues to prioritise the dignity and wellbeing of senior citizens through the revamping of rental and old age flats offered at a minimal rental fee for qualifying residents aged 60 years and older.
On 11 May 2026, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements Cllr Nsizwa Mekgwe visited the Tweedy Park Retirement Home in Brakpan to inspect the newly revamped residential units for the elderly.
Tweedy Park consists of 112 retirement units, offering strictly bachelor-style accommodation at an affordable rental tariff of R301 per month. The upgraded flats aim to provide elderly residents with a safe, secure and comfortable living environment.
Addressing residents during the visit, MMC Mekgwe reaffirmed the City’s commitment to improving the quality of life for senior citizens.
“Our elderly residents deserve to live in safe and dignified spaces where they can feel protected and cared for. Through these upgrades, the City is ensuring that senior citizens have access to affordable housing and improved living conditions,” said MMC Mekgwe.
During the engagement, certificates of compliance for fire and emergency safety were also handed over to residents who completed training conducted by the City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) Department.
One of the incoming tenants, Sally Hlakani, expressed her gratitude and excitement about moving into the revamped flats.
“I cannot be happier than today. I will now be living in a comfortable and secure environment, and I thank the City of Ekurhuleni for considering us as the elderly,” she said.
