Government Hands Over 140 Houses in Lothair
Families in Silindile, Lothair, are now able to look forward to more secure living conditions following the handover of 140 government-subsidised houses on Thursday, 23 July 2026, through the Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP).
The programme brought together COGHSTA MEC Mr Speedy Mashilo, Gert Sibande District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Walter Mngomezulu and Msukaligwa Local Municipality Executive Mayor Alderwoman Mapulane Nkosi, alongside beneficiaries and members of the community.
Among those symbolically welcomed into their new homes were Ms Fikile Xulu, who was accompanied by her two sons, and Mr Samson Mhlanga. The two beneficiaries also received food packages, furniture and blankets as part of the handover.
The programme further extended support to elderly residents at Sukumani Care Centre, where blankets were distributed, before government representatives engaged with the community on matters affecting residents.
The engagement included discussions around title deeds and the housing allocation process, providing residents with an opportunity to raise their concerns and engage directly with government representatives.
Held as part of Mpumalanga's Mandela Month activities under the theme, "It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity," the programme reflected the importance of practical interventions that improve the lives of communities while ensuring that residents remain part of conversations about matters that affect them.
