The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality has commenced the implementation of a road and bridge reconstruction programme aimed at restoring infrastructure damaged by various disasters, including the devastating floods experienced in June 2025.
The municipality has invested close to R25 million in the programme, which will see the reconstruction and rehabilitation of critical roads and bridges across Wards 1, 3, 4, 7, 18, 22, 24, 26 and 30.
The programme is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 50 local community members from the beneficiary wards. The workers will be employed for the duration of the seven-month construction period at a rate of R200 per day, while also gaining valuable skills and practical experience in the construction sector.
Speaking at one of the site handover events, KSD Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Nyaniso Nelani said the investment reflects the municipality’s commitment to rebuilding resilient infrastructure while creating opportunities for local communities.
“The reconstruction of these roads and bridges is not only about restoring infrastructure damaged by disasters, but also about improving access, enhancing mobility and stimulating economic activity within our communities. Equally important is the opportunity these projects provide for local residents to gain employment and acquire skills that will benefit them long after the projects have been completed.”
The projects being implemented include:
Reconstruction of Gcaleka Street in Ward 1.
Reconstruction of Vulindlela Road, benefiting Wards 4 and 30.
Rehabilitation of Chatham and Errol Sprigg Bridges, benefiting Wards 3 and 7.
Reconstruction of Sompa, Xhorana, Mahlungulu, Ndlovana and KwaKhawula Access Roads in Ward 22.
Reconstruction of Hlabatshana, Magombe and Dobe Access Roads in Ward 26.
Reconstruction of Nzulwini Bridge in Ward 24.
Reconstruction of the Ku Gunjana to Rune Access Road in Ward 18.
These projects form part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to rebuild communities affected by disasters while contributing to local economic development and job creation.
