Midvaal Local Municipality today unveiled the newly completed Savanna City Substation, aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution.
The project was completed on time and within budget at a total cost of R49 million.
The project forms part of the municipality’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to ensure that communities have access to reliable and sustainable electricity services.
The construction of the substation included the development of key electrical infrastructure in accordance with Eskom standards and specifications.
This included the construction of the substation terrace and earthmat, plinths and foundations.
The project also included the construction of an 88 kV control room, equipped with the required ventilation and warning signage, as well as 11 kV switching rooms, a control room and a load control room.
An oil holding dam was also constructed for the 88/11 kV transformers, while yard stone was spread across the substation yard in accordance with the required specifications.
The project also contributed to the local economy, creating at least 25 jobs during the construction phase.
A total of 10 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were also subcontracted to participate in the project.
The Savanna City Substation is an important addition to Midvaal’s electricity infrastructure and will increase capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area.
Midvaal continues to make these investments to unlock further developments and to ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.
