The event held at Masakhane Primary School in Hammanskraal on 22 September 2026.

Learners and educators from the neighbouring Adam Masebe Secondary School also participated in the festivities, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.

The tree-planting initiative forms part of the City's broader Urban Greening Programme, through which mass tree-planting has been earmarked for Hammanskraal. The programme aims to increase tree cover and improve environmental conditions.

Areas in the northern parts of Tshwane, including Hammanskraal, are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves. For this reason, the City has prioritised Hammanskraal and surrounding communities as key focus areas in its greening programme.

By increasing urban tree cover, the City seeks to create cooler, healthier and more resilient communities while promoting environmental awareness among young people. The collaboration between the City of Tshwane, UN-Habitat and TY-CAN highlights the importance of partnerships in advancing climate action and sustainable urban development.

The event not only celebrated Arbor Month but also inspired learners to become active custodians of the environment and champions of a greener future.
